NEW CASTLE — Happy new year, everyone!

I'm still writing 2012 on my checks and … this?

Anyway, I love the idea of a fresh start, a chance to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Besides, it's the only time of the year when sports fans can actually celebrate a ball being DROPPED.

But humor me for a moment. As we turn the calendar and begin our journey into 2014, I'd like to take one quick look back.

I'm an avid reader and a collector of thought-provoking quotes. Today, I'd like to reflect on four I picked up in 2013 and how they might move us forward into the new year.

Ponder them. Share them. Take them wherever you like.

But please — please — take them to heart.

I certainly will.

Our Daily Habits ...

The Quote: "With every decision you make, you are deciding who you want to be." — Jon Gordon

The Lesson: Life is nothing but a compound effect. What we repeatedly do, the directions we repeatedly go, what we repeatedly allow inside of our minds and bodies, is training us to live a certain way.

If you consistently choose fear, we train ourselves to be more fearful. If we consistently choose fast food over a healthier alternative, we've chosen to gain weight and slowly poison our bodies. If we consistently choose reality TV and Internet over good books, we've chosen to drift and distract.

So true. So simple. So hard.

So worth it to make the right choices.

Sports Coaching ...

The Quote: "A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime." — Billy Graham

The Lesson: This is powerful for those entrusted to lead young people on a field of play. We have tremendous impact over their lives. We influence their mindset, confidence, how they respond to authority, how they respond to adversity, and so much more.

It's a responsibility we must not take lightly.

This year, let's focus more on building young men and women more than building a resume. Let's focus more on the Jills and Joes than the X's and O's. Let's focus on developing great people and not just great players.

That's a win in anybody's book.

Our Spiritual Life ...

The Quote: "Your purpose for existing is this: to let God the Father love you." — Derwin Gray

The Lesson: Can you imagine what this world would look like if people knew they were loved?

It's impossible to share what we don't have. Sadly, many of us wander through life trying to attain love, acceptance, honor and security through our performance. We don't believe we are loved, so we spend our days trying to earn it.

To a certain extent, it works. That is, until someone else comes along who's just a little bit better than you.

Our pride makes us all strive to be the quarterback and call the plays. But life works so much better when we, in humility, allow ourselves to receive.

 Our Future …

The Quote: "Today, you are the oldest you've ever  been, and the youngest you'll ever be again. You are perfectly positioned between experience and opportunity." — Unknown

The Lesson: How old ARE you? Did you choose to be the age you are right now? Did you ever think you would REACH the age you are now?

I know people in their 20s who are "old" in their thought life, already looking back at what was. And I know people in their 50s and 60s who believe their best days are ahead of them.

Whether you think today is "just a start" or "dang, I blew it" is really how you will see tomorrow.

Your age at this very moment? You can’t go back and you can’t fast-forward. It is what it is. You are what you are.

But what you will be has yet to be decided.

So, will 2014 be the start of something new for your life or "just another year?"

The clock's ticking. It's time to make the call.

And you're the only one qualified to do it.
