NEW CASTLE —
What is your favorite place on Earth?
I have an embarrassing secret to share with you. Two weekends ago, I took a bus trip with some of the Jameson Hospital staff to New York City. When we came through the tunnel and saw the city sprawling out before us, I burst into tears.
Yep, full-on, snot-running-down-your-face, gasping-for-air tears. Not my proudest moment.
I'm pretty sure the other passengers were torn between offering me a Kleenex and looking around to see if there was a psychiatrist on the bus. Either way, suffice it to say I had a pretty emotional moment with the city I love.
You think love is too strong a word? I say it's the perfect word. Love hasn't exactly been kind to me for the past 40 years or so, and so I reserve my love for things like Dolce & Gabbana handbags and distant, over-populated cities.
And if I was going to be in a relationship, it would definitely be with the City That Never Sleeps. She's loud and crazy and sometimes obnoxious, all flashing lights and car horns — seemingly superficial, but rich with culture and heritage and all the things that make life seem worth getting out of bed in the morning for.
She tells stories that you hear nowhere else in the world. She makes me giddy with delight.
The city is busy and hectic, sure, but it's filled with interesting overheard conversations (check out www.overheardinnewyork.com!), great food, constant activity, and beautiful little moments that translate perfectly into memorable photographs. And where else can you drink coffee six times a day and feel perfectly justified doing so?
Anyhow, I could go on for days about this place. I think maybe I'll write her a love letter and spare you any more of my waxing poetic. You get the point — I heart New York. (I have a T-shirt that proves it.)
So what's your favorite place on Earth? If you don't have one, find one. Trust me, it's a relationship that requires very little effort and gives way more in return than you have to give.
I wouldn't trade my love affair for the world. Even if I did cry a little bit again on the way home.
