Lisa Madras: Want to learn more about yourself? Use some common scents

NEW CASTLE — What is your favorite smell?

I could easily list a hundred smells that would top my favorites list: freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, newly fallen leaves, bonfires, apple pie, lilac blooms, the top of a newborn baby's head.

It probably isn't too hard to figure out that my favorite smells are what would be categorized as "comfort" scents. And I guess it wouldn't be too much of a leap from there to assume that I'm the type of person who seeks out calming influences. (You don't say???)

Believe it or not, of our fives senses, the sense of smell is most influential to our behavior, our moods, controlling cravings, and memory recall.  And with more than 10,000 smells distinguishable to the human nose, that's a lot of triggers!

It might seem like a silly question to ask, but identifying your favorite smell (or smells) can actually tell you quite a bit about yourself.

Just for fun, here's a list of the most commonly liked smells, and what they say about you:

•Fresh air, sea spray, citrus: sporty, outdoorsy.

•Roses, scented candles: a dreamer.

•Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, moss: independent and unconventional.

•Wooded areas, clothing dried outside: outgoing, sociable, energetic.

•Apple pie, birthday cake, peaches, violets: romantic.

•Gardenias, incense, jasmine: sensual, self-assured, fashionable.

•Blackberries, burning wood, lilies: motivated, career-oriented.

•Freshly mowed grass, hyacinth: elegant, somewhat formal.

•Raspberries, old books, leather: charming, extroverted, love to entertain.

I'd be willing to bet that if you take the descriptions in each of your smell categories, it comes out to be a pretty accurate description of you. But why ask a question like this? Because knowing yourself is the best way to become the best you.

But mostly just for fun. Nothing wrong with that every now and again.

"Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived." — Helen Keller
