Sarah Stright-Hartley: Dressing for fall dates has many, many layers

NEW CASTLE — Fall in this area is filled with the perfect outdoor dates.

The trees are turning those beautiful shades and the chill in the air is ideal for being outside with your favorite person. During the fall I love visiting Pittsburgh and walking along the water, or sitting outside for one of those outdoor movies that they seem to do all around the city. Dressing for these dates is always my favorite, too, because it means layers! If you look to the right I've taken three examples of fall dates and planned an outfit for each.

•Football Game Date — I'll admit, the Steelers aren't exactly "my team" (I am from Ohio, after all), but I do think Heinz Field is a beautiful stadium. So taking in a game on a Sunday is OK by me. When I go on a football game date, I'm always dressed in my team gear (if they're playing, that is) and other really comfy layers. I love this cozy looking sweatshirt paired with a vest and matching scarf. Skinny jeans balance out the volume in the top and easy sneakers will make it easy to run to and from the concession stand between plays. Since the NFL changed its policy, leave the purse at home and just grab the essentials, hat and sunglasses.

•Fall Wedding — Outdoor fall weddings are my favorite (although maybe I'm a bit biased since I got married in the fall). The leaves create such a beautiful backdrop and you don't have to worry about sweating in your dress. If you're attending a wedding this fall, try a long-sleeved printed dress in emerald, a beautiful and popular color for fall. Opaque black tights and black heels will make your legs look a mile long. A gorgeous statement necklace and clean clutch are great complements. Finally, I love the idea of a three-quarter sleeve coat with a long sleeve dress. The sleeves will peek out the bottom of your coat sleeves and create a more interesting look. The white coat will also allow your dress to really stand out.

•Outdoor Movie — I love that this area offers so many places to see outdoor movies — it's one of my favorite inexpensive and romantic dates.  Since it can get quite cool sitting outside for the duration of the movie, I like to really bundle up. A flannel shirt underneath a cardigan and then underneath a leather jacket should keep you quite warm. A chunky sweater and knee-high boots give you the extra warmth when you need it. I usually keep this look quite simple with jewelry and a bag so that you aren't fussing over anything while you're enjoying the movie.

What is your favorite fall date?
