Sarah Stright: In praise of the white T-shirt

NEW CASTLE — A white T-shirt is one of the most versatile items a closet can hold.

It's classic, it's easy, and it's always comfortable.

That said, I am always on the hunt for that elusive perfect white tee. I own several already and each one is used for different looks. The most flattering cut? A v-neck tee.

The v-neck elongates the neck and makes the body look taller and leaner. I'd like to prove just how versatile this staple piece can be. To the right are both women's and men's looks. They range from the most casual, to professional, to a more dressy or classic look. (Both the women's and men's T-shirts were found at Oldnavy.com.)

Let's take a look at the women's styles. For summer, pair your classic white tee with shorts in a fun color, easy sandals and a great hat to shield you from the sun. Sunglasses, a tote bag, and classic watch are all the accessories you need for running errands or grabbing lunch.

Next, you can wear a white T-shirt to work if the rest of your outfit is professional. Wear it with a pair of classic black trousers and a great blazer- a unique blazer (such as with leather trim on the lapels, shown here) makes your outfit a bit more special. The rest of your accessories can also increase the chicness of your look. A bow belt, classic quilted laptop bag and professional accessories complete this look.

Finally, dressing up a white tee is one of my favorite ways to wear it because it is so unexpected. Pair it with a great lace skirt, bold heels, and a sequined clutch. A leather jacket for warmth and fabulous accessories will take this look far away from the more traditional, casual look of the white T-shirt.

Onto the men. Women tend to love a man in a white t-shirt and jeans, but check out these other options. First, a casual day warrants wearing your white tee with cargo shorts, sneakers, and a great pair of sunglasses. Whether you're working around the house or going out for lunch, this is a simple, comfortable option.

A more professional look with your white tee is achieved in much the same way as the women — pair it with a classic pair of trousers and a blazer.  Dressy shoes, a classic watch and leather belt will finish this look and make it office appropriate.

And last, a classic. Pair your white T-shirt with a pair of great dark wash denim jeans, and a tough leather jacket.

A simple plaid scarf and two-tone leather boots will make this look appropriate for dinner and a movie.

What do you wear your white t-shirts with?

Have you held or will you hold a garage/yard sale this year?

I have and it was a success! It's a great way to get rid of some junk and make a little extra pocket money.
I have, but it didn't go over so well. Better luck next time?
I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I haven't and I don't plan to. It's not for me.
