Sarah Stright-Hartley: So, what’s in your bag?

NEW CASTLE — One of the great things about being a woman is that you get to carry around bags filled with all of your favorite things to have whenever you may need them.

One of the not-so-great things about being a woman is carrying around a bag filled with all of your favorite things — it gets heavy!

On Saturday, I learned what would've been the perks of carrying around a couple extra things "just in case.” My husband bought me a Princess sash (yes, Princess sash) to wear for my 30th birthday party. Only it kept falling off my shoulder and I thought how great it would've been if I had been carrying a safety pin. This led to a discussion on what a woman SHOULD be carrying in her bag on any given day. Here are my suggestions (with pictures to the right).

•Wallet and phone (you know, the essentials)

•A planner/calendar. Whether you are old school like me and like to write things down, or you keep all the information in your smart phone, having a planner with you helps to easily schedule dates when you're out.

•A zipped pouch with a few makeup essentials. Mine include a favorite chapstick, concealer, mascara, lotion, a small bottle of perfume and a favorite lipstick. This helps to freshen up on the go, or to easily change from day to night.

•Business cards, because you never know who you will meet.

•A small sewing kit. This would've come in handy for me on Saturday night. Plus, I'm sure we've all been in the situation where having a needle and thread would've been ideal.

•A second zipped pouch to house a couple of pens and a place to stash receipts for reviewing later. I also keep at least one pair of sunglasses in this pouch.
