Report: Arians may not return to Steelers

PITTSBURGH — Bruce Arians might not return as the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator for the 2012 season, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The newspaper reported that it was unclear if the 57-year-old was possibly retiring or not having his contract renewed.

Arians, who is in the last year of his contract, reportedly considering retiring after the 2010 season because of health problems and other issues, but ultimately returned.

It was would be the first major coaching change during Mike Tomlin's reign as head coach. Arians has been the Steelers' offensive coordinator since 2007, when Tomlin took over as head coach.

According to the newspaper, Arians was told last week by Tomlin that he would return in 2012, and Tomlin even indicated as much in a news conference one day after the Steelers' playoff loss in Denver.

On Tuesday, however, team president Art Rooney II indicated that some members of the coaching staff were considering retirement.

It had been previously reported that Rooney was unhappy with the Steelers' recent emphasis on the passing game. The Steelers had traditionally featured a run-oriented offense before Arians became offensive coordinator.

Arians had also become a lightning rod for criticism from many corners of the Steelers' fan base over the years.

However, he always had two big supporters in Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

  • steelerswrapup.jpg Steelers humbled but optimistic after 8-8 finish

The Pittsburgh Steelers have seven long months to think about what exactly happened in 2013. Are they closer to the team that looked lost and overmatched at times during a 2-6 start? Or are they closer to the one that went 6-2 over the final eight weeks and came within a shanked field goal and a botched penalty call in San Diego from making the playoffs?

  • Treu.jpg Steve Treu: Steelers up the ante at the end of lackluster season

That was worth it. No matter what happens next weekend, that was worth it. Yesterday’s high-fiving, head-scratching, jaw-dropping, curse-inducing, postseason death-defying 38-31 victory by the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Green Bay Packers made this otherwise forgettable 2013 season at least somewhat memorable.

For one day, at least, Steelers fans got to turn all those frowns upside down. The recent study by two Emory University professors that described Steelers fans as the most negative in the NFL certainly would surprise no one around these parts, especially not if they have followed this season at all.
