WPIAL Volleyball Playoffs: Laurel earns first playoff win in years
It has been more than six years since the Laurel High girls volleyball team has won a WPIAL playoff match. The Lady Spartans had to work to make it happen last night, but happen it did. Laurel needed all five games to outlast Geibel Catholic 25-10, 25-27, 26-24, 20-25, 15-12 in a WPIAL Class A preliminary-round game at North Allegheny High School.

Three county WPIAL volleyball teams are set to begin their postseason journey. Laurel, Neshannock and Shenango learned their playoff fate yesterday as the district released the pairings. All three schools qualified in Class A.

Wilmington built a 3-0 lead and hung on for a 3-2 District 10, Region 2-AA boys soccer victory over Hickory. Ryan DiLullo scored the Greyhounds’ third goal with 30 minutes left to play. But the visiting Hornets cut the deficit to one with 15 minutes remaining.
NLDS: Wainwright, Cards end Pirates’ storybook season
Nobody’s better than the St. Louis Cardinals when they can’t afford to lose. Adam Wainwright went all the way on the mound and St. Louis got two-run homers from David Freese and Matt Adams to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 last night, advancing to the NL championship series for the third straight season.
