A pair of Lawrence County high school baseball teams received their playoff assignments yesterday. Laurel and Union high are the lone area representatives in the WPIAL playoffs, which open Monday.

Union High graduate Jason Burkes was a hitting machine for the Pitt-Bradford baseball team in its season finale. Burkes went 7 for 7 in the Panthers 15-10 victory over Houghton.

Shenango High track and field star Amanda Herb is looking to make waves at the WPIAL Championships. Herb shined during the WPIAL Class AA Qualifier at Shady Side Academy yesterday, taking home the top spot in the shot put (37-9) and discus (100-9).

WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifier: New Castle boys advances to championships
The results were mixed yesterday for the New Castle High boys and girls track and field teams. Five individuals and a relay team advanced for the Red Hurricane boys at the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifier at Butler High School. No members of the Lady ’Canes moved on.
