Youth Football: Union district to take over kids’ program

NEW CASTLE — The Union Area School District is doing its part to help youth football in the township.

The Union Area School Board’s athletic committee and the Union Township Athletic Association have approved the transition of the Pee Wee and Midget football programs to the district.

With the cooperation of both groups, the school district now assumes control of the football programs, which will be funded by the Union Athletic Boosters at a cost that figures to be in excess of $10,000.

“The school district saw this as a means of helping out a struggling youth program which has been, traditionally, a successful organization,” Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Angelucci said. “With the school district supervising the program and the booster organization funding the program, we see this as an opportunity for stabilization.”

An information workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the high school cafeteria. At this meeting, parents will have the opportunity to ask questions about the sport, provide feedback to the presenters and gain the necessary information to help with registration. There will be no registration fee for the students who decide to join.

Registration has been scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9 for next year’s grades 5-6 (Midget League) and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 16 for next year’s grades 3-4 (Pee Wee League). Midget League registration will be at the high school gym area. Pee Wee registration will take place at the main entrance of the elementary school. Parents who have questions may call Union athletic director Bob Natale at (724) 658-4775.
