WPIAL Volleyball Playoffs: Three local teams set for action

NEW CASTLE — Three county WPIAL volleyball teams are set to begin their postseason journey.

Laurel, Neshannock and Shenango learned their playoff fate yesterday as the district released the pairings. All three schools qualified in Class A.

The Lady Spartans (11-6) will meet Geibel Catholic at 6 p.m. today at North Allegheny in a preliminary-round game. The winner earns the No. 15 seed and advances to meet second-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic in the opening round at 6 p.m. Thursday at Freeport.

Laurel placed third in Section 3 with an 8-4 mark. The Lady Centurions won the WPIAL championship last year, winning all three matches by 3-0 counts. They came within just a few points of advancing to the PIAA championship as well. But six players graduated from that squad, five of which were starters.

Neshannock (13-3) will meet fifth-seeded South Side Beaver at 6 p.m. tomorrow at North Allegheny. The 12th-seeded Lady Lancers finished second in Section 3 at 9-3.

Neshannock took seventh place over the weekend at the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Invitational. The 12-team invitational was for Class A teams. The Lady Lancers won a game each against OLSH and Serra Catholic, both teams finished unbeaten in their respective sections.

Fourth-seeded Shenango (14-1) will square off against Vincentian Academy at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Pine-Richland. The winner moves on to meet the survivor of the Neshannock-South Side Beaver matchup on Oct. 29 at a time and site to be determined in the quarterfinals.

Wilmington, a District 10, Class AA member, was the lone team to score a victory over the Lady Wildcats. Shenango won the Section 3 title with a 12-0 mark.

Four teams from the WPIAL in Class A advance to the state playoffs. The WPIAL Class A championship is set for Nov. 2 at Chartiers Valley.
