Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Sept. 5

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel High volleyball team was pushed to the brink last night.

But the Lady Spartans still found a way to hold off Neshannock.

Laurel needed five games to claim a 25-23, 12-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-13 WPIAL Section 3-A home victory over Neshannock.

Mackenzie Mraz paced the Lady Spartans (1-0 section, 2-0 overall) with six kills, 14 points, 15 digs and three aces. Rachael Baker contributed 13 kills, six points, five digs. Ally Kendall posted 13 points and 18 digs. Makayla Dupont followed with 25 assists, six points and five digs.

Ellen Shaffer chipped in with seven kills and three blocks.

Madison Altmyer registered 15 points and eight kills for the Lady Lancers (0-2, 0-2) and Courtney Proctor was next with seven kills.

Taylor Frank contributed 13 points, three aces and 45 assists, while Jordan Wethli slammed 10 kills with six points and three aces. Gina Zingaro served up three aces with six digs. Cassidy Burrelli added six kills and three blocks.

Laurel won the JV match, 25-19, 25-22.

Stephanie Telesz led the Lady Spartans with six points and five kills. Paige Covelli collected six points and four kills.

Brittany Kendall added five points and three kills for the winners.

Lady Scots hold on

Union knocked off visiting Aliquippa in Section 3-A action, 26-24, 25-22, 25-17.

Morgan Miller posted 10 kills for the Lady Scots (1-1, 1-2) and Christina Noble added seven aces.

Tyanna Harris chipped in with 10 assists and three aces. Dacia Neely notched three digs for the winners.

Union won the JV match as well, 25-7, 25-14.

Lady Warriors lose

Mohawk dropped a 25-6, 25-10, 25-9 Section 1-AA home decision to Hopewell.

Samantha Carr contributed four digs and four kills for the Lady Warriors (0-2, 1-2). Malea Tress was next with six assists. McKenzie Stelter scooped up six digs and Maria Fleck was next with four.

Mohawk won the JV match, 25-19, 26-24, 15-8.

Ashley McConnell led the Lady Warriors with four assists and Erin Giancola followed with four aces.

Ellwood falls on road

Ellwood City Lincoln came up on the short end of a 25-19, 25-10, 25-15 Section 1-AA road loss to Blackhawk.

Emily Brown led the Lady Wolverines (0-1, 1-1) with five assists and Bailey McKinney added five blocks and five kills.

Susie Blyth chipped in with 11 digs.

Ellwood City lost the JV match, 25-8, 25-23.

Lady ’Hounds prevail

Wilmington opened the season with a 25-22, 25-17, 26-24 District 10, nonregion home win over Sharpsville.

Tessa Sikora served up 10 points, 12 kills and three blocks for the Lady Greyhounds and Alana Romeo recorded eight points and six digs. Cassidy Marett tallied six points, four kills, 15 assists and 15 digs.

Jamie Thompson posted five points and 11 digs for the winners, while Stephanie Parker posted four points, four kills and six digs. Katherine Clark collected four points and six digs.

The Lady Greyhounds won the JV match as well in three games. The scores were not provided.

Amanda Lewis supplied seven points, seven digs and three kills, while Alana Romeo registered seven markers and six assists.

Jordan Dye delivered five points and Julia Strobel scooped up eight digs. Sarah Schwenke added six digs.

Lady ’Cats roll

Shenango cruised past Beaver County Christian for a 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 Section 3-A victory.

Katie Lacey paced the Lady Wildcats (2-0, 2-0) with nine kills and Jacqui Baker supplied eight kills and three blocks.

Christina Rapone recorded 19 assists and eight aces. Jade Esposito was next with 12 digs.

Shenango won the JV match 25-10, 25-4.

Valentina Vincent tallied six aces and Sarah Herb rolled up seven assists. Angelina Sibeto slammed four kills.

Boys golf

Wilmington wins

Nate Anthony shot a 39 to lead the Greyhounds to a 189-200 nonregion win over Heartland Christian (Ohio) on the back nine at Tanglewood.

Matt Zimmer and Collin Duffy both shot a 46 for Wilmington (7-4) and Jake Berlin was next with a 58.

Malizia excels

New Castle’s Nick Malizia shot a 39 in a 204-210 Section 5, Division 3 loss to Blackhawk at Sylvan Heights.

Lady ’Hounds win

Wilmington snapped a two-match losing streak with a 5-0 District 10, Region 1-AA road win over Oil City.

Alanna Elliott (No. 1), Alexis Donati (No. 2) and Nikki McCown (No. 3) all captured singles wins for Wilmington (5-2 region, 5-2 overall).

The doubles tandems of Lydea Kraynak/Holly Vernon (No. 1) and Taylor Cox/Lydea Zoeller (No. 2) also tallied victories for Wilmington.

Neshannock falls

The Lady Lancers won two doubles matches in a 3-2 Section 2-AA loss to Blackhawk at Pearson Park.

The doubles tandems of Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta (No. 1) and Erin Warvell/Anna Warvell (No. 2) picked up wins for Neshannock (2-2, 2-2).

The Lady Lancers won the JV match, 3-2.

Emma Weatherby (No. 1), Gabi Janiel (No. 2) and Kacey Copple (No. 3) all earned singles wins for Neshannock.
