Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Sept. 3

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel High volleyball team made sure opening night was a success for coach Joe Maslyk.

Mackenzie Mraz posted 15 points, nine aces and four kills to help the Lady Spartans to a 25-8, 25-19, 25-14 nonsection home win over Freedom. It was the first victory for Maslyk, a first-year coach.

Rachel Baker was next with nine points, five aces and three digs for Laurel. Makayla Dupont followed with nine points, eight assists and three aces.

Laurel won the JV match, 23-25, 25-9, 15-12.

Stephanie Telesz paced the Lady Spartans with 11 points and five aces.

Emily Gibson notched seven points and four aces for Laurel and Brittany Kendall collected nine points, four aces and three kills.

Lady ’Cats prevail

Shenango held on for a 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 Section 3-A season-opening road win over Neshannock.

Jade Esposito scooped up 18 digs for the Lady Wildcats and Nicole Watkins slammed 10 kills. Katie Lacey served up nine aces for the victors and Jacqui Baker added three blocks.

Madison Altmyer notched four points and four kills for the Lady Lancers. Jordan Wethli contributed nine kills and Kayla Zingaro followed with six points. Kayla’s twin sister Gina Zingaro chipped in with five markers.

Cassidy Burrelli spiked seven kills and Taylor Frank set up 28 assists.

Shenango won the JV match as well 25-12, 25-13.

Union falls

Beaver County Christian knocked off host Union in Section 3-A season-opening action 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.

No individual stats were provided.

The Lady Scots lost the JV match as well, 25-13, 25-14.

Ellwood wins

The Lady Wolverines knocked off New Brighton in a nonsection lidlifter, 25-17, 29-27, 25-18.

Amber Leech collected eight digs for Ellwood City Lincoln and Bailey McKinney added eight assists. Susie Blyth notched five aces, while Allie McKelvey and Autumn Kuzmin slammed five kills apiece.

Ellwood City won the JV match as well, 25-8, 25-15.

Emily Brown notched six aces for the Lady Wolverines and Sidney Shurtz added four digs and four assists. Josalyn Izzo contributed four assists and Taylor Petrak was next with four kills.
