Both New Castle High and Lower Merion fans were amazed by Malik Hooker’s vicious throwdown in the first half of last night’s PIAA semifinal matchup.
Even ESPN was impressed. Hooker’s incredible dunk was No. 5 on last night’s Top 10 Plays of the Night.

WPIAL Softball Playoffs: Neshannock pounds Serra Catholic
The Neshannock High softball team is picking up where it left off last postseason. The defending PIAA Class AA champions began their pursuit of a WPIAL Class A crown and a state playoff return with a resounding statement, posting a 14-0 decision over Serra Catholic in the WPIAL quarterfinals at North Hills High School.
Normally, players like to forget losses.Shenango High softball coach Amy Delaney hopes yesterday’s 9-2 setback to Frazier in a WPIAL Class A softball quarterfinal at Fairhaven Park remains fresh in the team’s mind during the offseason, though.
The Mohawk High softball team had opportunities yesterday. Unfortunately for the Lady Warriors, they let many of those chances get away.
When it comes to bowling, 12-year-old Trent Pektas just keeps on rolling. Trent, a Wilmington Middle School sixth grader, claimed the boys 12 and under title of the 2013 Pennsylvania Pepsi Youth Championships over the weekend in Harrisburg.
District 10, Class AA Track and Field Championships: Wilmington’s Yohman was good as gold
Wilmington High’s Jon Yohman turned in a golden effort Saturday. Yohman captured gold medals in the shot put and the discus events at the District 10, Class AA Track and Field Championships at Harbor Creek High’s Paul J. Weitz Stadium.
NHL Playoffs: Ottawa topples Pens in two OT
Colin Greening wore six stitches on his left cheek, and a wide smile, after Ottawa’s double overtime playoff victory against Pittsburgh. Greening ended the longest game of this year’s postseason with a backhander off a rebound 7:39 into the second OT, and the Senators’ 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins cut their series deficit to 2-1 tonight.
WPIAL Track and Field Championships: Mohawk’s Grim reaps 800 title
Hopes and dreams fueled area athletes at the WPIAL Track and Field Championships yesterday. Aspirations of capturing a WPIAL title and punching a ticket to the state meet filled the minds of those who packed Baldwin High School to prove their mettle.

Lawrence County girls shined in the field events at the WPIAL Championship. Shenango High’s Amanda and Sarah Herb highlighted the participants, as the sister tandem scored top performances in the field.
New Castle Basketball: Former 'Canes' standout to play professionally
New Castle High graduate and Slippery Rock University basketball standout Devin Taylor is going pro. Taylor signed a professional contract yesterday to play for the Etzella Ettelbruck Basketball Club in Luxembourg for the 2013-2014 season.
Once again, Austin was awesome for the Beaver High baseball team. This time, it was Austin Logan who pitched a gem and led the Bobcats past Laurel, 6-0, in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal clash at historic Pullman Park.
