Spring Sports: A roundup of action from May 7

NEW CASTLE — The Neshannock High softball team clinched another section crown.

The Lady Lancers captured the WPIAL Section 4-A title outright yesterday with a 10-3 win over host South Side Beaver.

The section crown is the program’s ninth in 13 years, coach Tracy Kimmel reported.

“That’s a pretty good accomplishment,” he said. “The first goal is to win the section title, because you get something for that. Now, we’re going to turn our attention to the playoffs.”

The loss dropped South Side Beaver (11-3, 13-3) into third place in the section behind Neshannock (13-1, 13-2) and Shenango (12-2, 14-3).

The WPIAL softball playoff pairings are expected to be released today.

“Our section is pretty tough,” Kimmel said. “I haven’t seen any other teams play. I just go by their records. With us, South Side and Shenango, it’s pretty strong.

“I think Shenango can get a top seed, possibly four or five. They’ll probably drop South Side down to a seven or eight. They have to give some other teams some love. We won’t have to wait long to find out. I’m hoping this will solidify a first-round bye for us. We could use the rest.”

Madison Shaffer went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits and striking out seven. She walked three.

“She looked like the Maddie of old,” Kimmel said. “She was bringing it. She was throwing a lot of strikes. She was throwing it good and hard.”

Gina Zingaro and Cassidy Burrelli paced the Lady Lancers’ 15-hit attack.

Zingaro counted a triple among her three hits and drove in three runs, while Burrelli had three hits, including a double.

Alexandra Fisher had two hits and three RBIs and Marissa DeMatteo also had a pair of hits, including a double.

“We spanked the ball,” Kimmel said. “We jumped on them in the beginning and kept going.

“We played solid defense and made some really great plays. Defense is king with me. It’s the name of the game.”
