Spring Sports: A roundup of action from April 21

NEW CASTLE — Softball

Union 17,

Rochester 2

The Lady Scots erupted for a Section 4-A home verdict over the Lady Rams.

The game was stopped after four innings because of the mercy rule.

LaShá Clark, Johnna Johnston and Skylar Thompson recorded three hits each for Union. Clark collected a solo inside-the-park home run in the second inning, her first blast of the season, to go along with a pair of RBIs.

Johnston knocked in four runs.

Kara Vercilla and Jaynna Johnston, Johnna’s sister, posted two hits and a pair of RBIs apiece.

Hannah Booth drove in three runs.

Jaynna Johnston (1-3) picked up the win. Johnston tossed four innings, giving up three hits and two runs — one earned — with four strikeouts and a walk.

The Lady Scots (2-5, 2-5) scored two runs in the first inning, nine in the second, three in the third and three more in the fourth.

Rochester (2-5, 2-6) scored two runs in the fourth.

“The Johnston sisters put it together for us,” Union coach Anthony Conforti said. “Jaynna pitched a great game. Johnna’s bat came to life.

“I told the girls, their hard work will pay off. I told them to take each game one at a time.”

Wilmington 7,

Jamestown 3

Alexis Donati broke open a 2-2 ballgame with a two-run homer in the third inning to propel the Lady Greyhounds to the District 10, Region 2-AA home victory.

The home run was her third of the season.

The Lady Muskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second, but Wilmington (3-0, 8-0) responded with two tallies in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Greyhounds put the game away with three runs in the fourth.

Alanna Elliott had an RBI triple, while Nikki McCown connected on two hits, including a double. Kayleigh Shenker also had two hits.

Shenker went the distance to pick up her eighth win of the season, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, five walks and five strikeouts.
