Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Sept. 14

NEW CASTLE — Neshannock High girls cross country standout Lizzie Manickas turned in another stellar effort Saturday.

Manickas finished second in the Slippery Rock Invitational, posting a time of 19:13.

Last week, Manickas, a senior, rolled to the championship of the Big Red Invitational hosted by West Middlesex. She finished in 19:27.

Reagan Wish placed 70th for the Lady Lancers in 25:59 and Laura Na was 75th in 26:42. Sydney Cosgrove (91st, 30:02) and Leah Quimby (98th, 31:41) also competed for Neshannock.

The Lady Lancers placed 10th as a team.

Robbie Kroner paced the Neshannock boys at the invitational, finishing sixth in 17:05. Chris Noga was 40th in 19:32.

Robert Kwiat placed 59th for the Lancers in 20:10 and Austin Moose was 69th in 20:39. Adam Alkhafaji (87th, 21:34), Alexander Brown (91st, 21:52) and Chris Clark (93rd, 21:55) also participated for Neshannock.

Elaina McNatt finished 36th for the Neshannock girls junior high team in 13:18. The Lady Lancers finished in 10th place.

Ian Jackson captured 151st place for the Neshannock boys junior high team in 12:56. The Lancers took 38th place.

Gealy leads ’Hounds

Wilmington’s Calvin Gealy claimed sixth place in the Commodore Perry Invitational in 17:38.

Jared Masters placed 18th for the Greyhounds in 18:18 and Brett Whitty was 24th in 18:42. Ryan Davis (51st, 19:31) and Stefan Pontius (57th, 19:56) also competed for Wilmington.

Kate Robb finished in seventh place for the Lady Greyhounds in 21:14 and Lexi Brumbaugh was 12th in 22:01.

Allison Baldwin was 23rd in 22:50 for Wilmington.

The Greyhounds’ boys team finished sixth and the girls team took third.

Nathan Twigg finished in fourth place for the Greyhounds’ boys junior high team and Mei Williams took sixth place for the Lady Greyhounds.

Kirkwood earns medal

Neshannock’s Marissa Kirkwood placed third at the MAC, which was held at Black Hawk Golf Course in Chippewa.

A total of 14 schools competed in the event.

Kirkwood, a sophomore, finished third with a 79.

Madison McDaniel of Central Valley won the event with a two-under 69. MacKenzie Fouse, also of Central Valley, was second with a 73.

The top three golfers earned a medal.

“It’s good to see her compete like that,” said Neshannock coach Mike Kirkwood, who doubles as Marissa’s dad. “She’s put the time in and it’s nice to see her put it together in competition like she did.”

Marissa Kirkwood will compete Thursday at Ponderosa Golf Course in the WPIAL Class AA girls individual semifinals.

Neshannock ties

The Lady Lancers’ Annie Litrenta scored the game-tying goal with just five minutes to go in regulation against New Brighton and the teams settled for a 1-1 tie.

The Lady Lions scored their goal with 20 minutes to go in regulation.

Neshannock (3-0-1, 4-0-2) outshot New Brighton in overtime, 5-0.

Madison McHale made seven saves in goal for the Lady Lancers.

Girls tennis

Neshannock came up short in a 3-2 Section 2-AA road loss against Riverside.

The doubles tandems of Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta (No. 1) and Erin Warvell/Anna Warvell (No. 2) posted wins for the Lady Lancers (3-3, 3-3).
