NEW CASTLE — Neshannock High girls tennis player Cecilia Weingart made a strong run the last two days.

Weingart reached the WPIAL Section 2-AA individual singles semifinals before falling, and then lost in the consolation match. The two-day event was held at Pearson Park and Brady’s Run.

The top three individuals advance to the WPIAL Singles Championship on Wednesday at Keystone Oaks.

Weingart was seeded fourth overall. She beat Maggie Shablesky (Beaver Falls) in the first round, 10-0. In the quarterfinals, Weingart beat Sierra Beighey (Riverside), 10-8.

A junior, Weingart lost in the consolation match to Blackhawk’s Kate Fierens, who was seeded third, 6-2, 6-3.

“This is a really great showing for Weingart,” Lady Lancers coach Chuck Dess said. “She moved into the singles spot this year. She’s really just come on strong this year.

“She’s always wanted to play singles. I thought she did a really great job.”

The Lady Lancers’ Meg Johntony, who was unseeded, topped Courtney Norman (New Brighton) in the first round, 10-7. In the quarterfinals, Johntony lost to second-seeded Mattie Taylor (Beaver), 10-3.
