NAMES IN THE GAMES: Catching up with local athletes competing in college

The Westminster College men’s basketball team is playing for a big prize today.

The Titans can claim the Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular-season title and the top seed in next week’s PAC Tournament with a win over Bethany at 4 p.m. at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster is 9-2 in the PAC and 17-7 overall. The Bison are 9-2 in the conference and 18-6 overall.

The Titans have several local products, including Craig Hannon, Dom Joseph, David Richards and Mike Kobal.

Hannon, a junior guard from Union High, averages 12.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.

Joseph, a senior guard/forward from New Castle, averages 12.5 markers and 4.9 rebounds a contest.

Richards, a sophomore guard from New Castle, nets 3.3 points a game and he has handed out 54 assists.

Kobal, a sophomore forward from Neshannock, has played in nine games and is averaging just under one point and one rebound.

SCORING COLUMN

California’s Theron Colao scored two points with three rebounds in a 61-59 loss to Lock Haven on Feb. 10.

Colao, a junior guard from Ellwood City Lincoln, is averaging 7.9 points and two rebounds. He has also handed out 31 assists.

California is 18-5.



PLAYING TIME

Hiram’s Shawn DeJohn is seeing limited action for the Terriers (7-16).

A sophomore from Shenango, DeJohn is averaging 3.9 points a game and 1.1 rebounds a tilt in eight games.



PLAYING WELL

Waynesburg College’s Jeff Nero posted seven points and five rebounds in an 89-77 triumph over Thomas More in a PAC matchup on Thursday.

Nero tied for team-high honors with Beau Wilson as each netted 18 markers in an 84-82 overtime loss to Westminster College on Feb. 10. He also added four rebounds in the setback.

Nero, a senior forward from Union, averages 11.3 points and 5.4 rebounds a contest for the 11-12 Yellow Jackets.



CARR SHOW

Grove City’s Shawn Carr tallied 21 points in an 87-84 loss to Washington & Jefferson on Thursday in a PAC matchup.

Carr was 7 of 16 from the field with a team-best-11 rebounds and three steals.

Carr also had 21 points in an 84-74 loss to Saint Vincent College on Feb. 10. He was 7 of 11 from the field, including 6 of 8 from behind the arc, to go along with six rebounds.

Carr, a junior guard from Mohawk, is averaging 10.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. He has also dished out 40 assists.

Bobby Turner, a junior from Laurel, is seeing limited action for the Wolverines. He has played in 15 games, averaging 2.5 points and two rebounds a contest. He had three points in the loss to Saint Vincent.

Grove City is 12-12.



SEEING ACTION

Geneva’s Richard Colick is seeing limited action for the Golden Tornadoes.

Colick recorded two points and two rebounds in a 69-66 loss to Roberts Wesleyan College on Feb. 10.

A freshman guard/forward from Mohawk, Colick averages 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Golden Tornadoes (13-15).



Women’s basketball

ON THE FLOOR

Grove City College’s Katy McCready registered five points with three assists and two rebounds in a 67-49 loss to Washington & Jefferson on Thursday in a PAC contest.

McCready tallied two markers in an 84-63 loss to St. Vincent College on Feb. 10.

A sophomore guard from Mohawk, McCready averages 1.7 points a game for the Lady Wolverines (5-18).



FEE CHIPS IN

Westminster’s Nicole Fee continues to contribute for the Lady Titans.

Fee, a senior guard from Neshannock, is averaging 6.1 points and 2.3 rebounds a game.

Westminster is tied for first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference at 9-2. The Lady Titans are 19-5 overall.
