Spring Sports: A roundup of local action for May 15

NEW CASTLE — Wilmington High softball pitcher Abby Sotter was in control yesterday.

Sotter tossed a complete game, lifting the Lady Greyhounds to a 6-1 District 10, Region 2-AA home win over Mercer.

Sotter (15-2) gave up just one hit and an unearned run with a walk and five strikeouts. The Lady Mustangs’ lone hit was an infield single in the seventh with no outs.

“Sotter was in full control of all of her pitches and she kept them off balance,” said first-year Wilmington coach Tom Reed.

Aryn Boyer and Kristen Klein posted two hits each for the Lady Greyhounds. Boyer and Courtney Cohen notched two RBIs apiece.

Wilmington (7-1 region, 16-2 overall) registered eight hits.

The Lady Greyhounds scored three runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third and another in the fifth.

Mercer (4-4, 11-6) tallied its marker in the first inning on two Wilmington errors.

The Lady Greyhounds secured the region crown last week. The District 10 playoff pairings will be released over the weekend and Wilmington opens the district playoffs Tuesday according to Reed.
