PIAA Class AA Track and Field Championships: Local girls fare well

NEW CASTLE — Julie Falvo came through in the clutch yesterday and earned some bronze in the process.

The Wilmington High junior captured third place in the discus at the PIAA Class AA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Falvo, who claimed the District 10 title with a throw of 127-4, had to exceed that mark to reach top-three status. She produced a 130-3 toss to jump into third place. Seneca’s Samantha Black won gold with a 133-9 throw, while North Schuykill’s Carter Green was second at 133-0.

“Julie was seeded second and finished third. However, she came up with a huge throw in the prelims that she had to have just to make it to the finals,” Wilmington coach J. R. McFarland said. “In the finals, she threw 130-3 and that was a personal record for her. She has done a tremendous job in the discus all year. We are really happy for her.”

Falvo can add to her medal collection in today’s shot put competition. She won the District 10 title in the discus with a throw of 127-4. She finished third in the shot put at 37-3 3/4.

In addition, Hannah Drake competes in today’s triple jump competition. She won the D-10 title at 35-11. Also, she was part of the Lady Greyhounds’ 3200 relay team with Kate Robb, Rikki Brumbaugh and Allison Baldwin. The squad finished the PIAA preliminary round in 10:07.24 and did not advance.

“Those girls are very young and they have had a very strong year,” McFarland said. “A lot of people say it really takes one year down here to get the feel of the meet before you’re ready to medal. This year, they had their minds made up to make it down here. Their goal next year is to come down here and medal and I believe they will. They are a great group of girls and they work really hard.”

Mohawk’s Maria Fleck advanced to today’s semifinals in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. The sophomore, who finished fifth at the WPIAL championship meet in 15.87, was fifth in her 100 hurdles heat at 16.02. She was third in the WPIAL meet in the 300 hurdles at 45.88. She finished third in her heat yesterday at 45.83.

Attempts to reach Lady Warriors coach Dave Bredl were unsuccessful.

She finished seventh in her preliminary heat at 1:02.84 and failed to advance. The sophomore was fifth at the WPIAL meet in 1:00.52. Corie Palmer finished tied for 15th in the pole vault at 9-0.
