NEW CASTLE —
The Neshannock High golf team saw its 33-game regular-season winning streak come to an end yesterday.
Sewickley Academy topped the Lancers, 189-215, in a nonsection matchup at Allegheny Country Club.
It was a bit of redemption for the Panthers (3-0), who were runners-up in the WPIAL championship to Neshannock (1-1) the last two years.
“It was a good test on a good course against a good team,” said Lancers coach Mike Kirkwood, whose team went undefeated last year and lost just once in 2010. “We definitely have to get better. We’re not putting as well as we could. We just have to get things rolling a little bit. We have too many unforced errors.”
The Lancers’ Matt Cioffi and Max Watters tied for a team-best 39 on the front nine (par 35). Michael Maciarello followed with a 44, Marcus Giangiuli added a 45 and Walter DeMase rounded out the scoring with a 48.
Sewickley Academy’s Keenan Hickton was the medalist with a 33.
Kirkwood said the Panthers enjoyed a bit of a home-course advantage, but it was worth it to play at Allegheny Country Club.
“The course is absolutely beautiful,” he said. “Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby are members there, so that tells you a little bit about how prestigious it is. Just a really, really nice course.”
The Spartans improved to 2-0 with a 211-238 victory over Ellwood City Lincoln in a Section 5-AA showdown.
Laurel’s Nick Peluso and Ellwood City’s Michael Rue tied for medalist honors with a pair of 38s at Green Meadows Golf Course. The Spartans’ Shane Wilson finished a stroke behind with a 39, while Cody Crawford fired a 44. Ben Armando and Colton Brown each carded a 45 for Laurel.
Ellwood City’s R.J. Leisie and Justin Baney followed Rue with 47s. Derek Baker and Blake Beatrice each shot a 53 to round out the scoring.
