The FEK Baseball Foundation: Nine Legends of North County to be inducted

NEW CASTLE — The FEK Baseball Foundation will introduce nine more Legends of the North County League at 4 p.m. Sunday at Flaherty Field.

This will be the fourth induction ceremony, recognizing players and umpires who made the North County League special for the last 67 years. The league was founded in 1946 and has been in existence every year since then.

This year’s inductees include Omar Abdoe, Bob Capezio, Carmen Fusco, Joe Ginocchi, Mike Othites, Ed Prence, Steve Shaffer, Henry “Bucco” Turner and Ed Urian.

Abdoe was an all-section shortstop from Shenango High School, while Capezio umpired in the league for more than 20 years.

Fusco, a former New Castle High star, played in the league in the 1970s and later made a name for himself in Major League Baseball. Fusco was the assistant general manager of the New York Mets and later the head of professional scouting with the Seattle Mariners.

Ginocchi was a slick-fielding second baseman in the league in the 1950s, while Othites held the same position in the league 30 years later. Othites currently is the head baseball coach at his Shenango High School alma mater.

Prence was an all-section shortstop for Ellwood City’s Lincoln High School who played in the league in the 70’s and 80’s. He is the author of the book, “The Last Perfect Summer.”

Shaffer was a sweet-swinging lefty out of Union High who played in the league in the 1980s and ’90s, while Turner was a fleet-footed outfielder that played for Ellwood City in the ’70s and ’80s. Urian, a Shenango High School graduate, was a crafty left-handed pitcher.

FEK Baseball also will present the Anthony Aven scholarship to Sean Coyne, a New Castle High graduate who will attend Mount Union College.

The Aven scholarship is given to a graduate of Ne-Ca-Hi who displays the toughness and intensity that made Aven a special athlete at New Castle. Previous winners of the Aven scholarship include Joe Ambrosini and Jusin Fleo.

The FEK Baseball Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation named after the late Fred Kelly to promote baseball in Lawrence County.

“My father introduced me to the game of baseball as a young child, in fact, my first memories of my dad include him pitching to me in the back yard, FEK founder and Fred’s son Larry Kelly said. “I’ve always said that my father had three true loves — my mother, his only child and the game of baseball.”
