WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifier: New Castle boys advances to championships

NEW CASTLE — The results were mixed yesterday for the New Castle High boys and girls track and field teams.

Five individuals and a relay team advanced for the Red Hurricane boys at the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifier at Butler High School. No members of the Lady ’Canes moved on.

The top eight in each event moved on to the WPIAL Championships, which will be held at 1 p.m. May 16 at Baldwin High School.

“I’m pleased with the amount of people that advanced,” New Castle boys coach Bill Croach said of his team.

Antonio Rudolph moved on in three events. Rudolph took second place in the 400 (50.00) and second in the triple jump (42-9 1/4). He competed on the 400 relay team that took eighth in 45.07.

“Tone ran his best time in the 400,” Croach said. “He had his best triple jump, too; I’m very happy and very pleased with his performance.

“Each meet he gets faster. The next meet, getting a time of under 50 in the 400 is his goal.”

Mike Mazzanti captured second place in the 800 in 1:58.41.

“Mike got boxed in early,” Croach said. “His goal today was to make it to next week with a good time.

“He’s shooting for his best time next week.”

Malik Hooker, who is in his first season competing in track, qualified in the high jump at 5-9.

“For Malik to make it to the finals, we didn’t see it coming; he excelled,” Croach said. “If he gets 6-1 or 6-3, he’ll advance. He has that in him.”

Levar Ware was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 152-4.

“I think he’s got 170 in him,” Croach said. “Let’s hope he has that in him for the next meet. That’s when it counts.”

Jake McPhatter, Rudolph, Hooker and Khalil Huddleston were members of the 400 relay team.

“They did what they had to do to make it to next week,” Croach said. “I’m not real pleased with the time, and they’re not either. We have a lot of work to do.”

Huddleston finished fourth in the 100 in 11.09.

“That was a solid time for Khalil and his best time of the year in the 100,” Croach said.

Ellwood City’s Angela McCowin finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.23) and fourth in the high jump with an effort of 5-0. Teammate Brooke Muntean placed eighth in the 200 in 28.0.

The Lady Wolverines’ 400 relay team of McKenzie Barkey, Andi Hozick, Autumn Kuzmin and McCowin took eighth in the 400 relay in 53.34.

Hozick captured fifth place in the discus with a toss of 107-3 and Abbey Eisenbrown was second in the pole vault at 9-6.
