NEW CASTLE — The Union High boys basketball team’s season ended with a loss to Clairton.

Of course, that’s how it went for a lot of football and basketball teams in recent years.

Many of the Bears responsible for the 63-straight football wins played basketball, too. They knocked off WPIAL Section 1-A champ Lincoln Park as well before falling in the district championship game.

Nevertheless, the Scotties racked up a successful season and senior Markel Peace helped lead the way. He was named the all-section first team along with Lincoln Park’s Elijah Minnie and Maverick Rowan, Western Beaver’s Nick Miller and Cornell’s Dane Jackson.

Peace average 18.9 points per game, which ranked third in Lawrence County. He added a team-best 41 3-pointers.

“It is a well-deserved honor for Markel,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “Markel had a very solid year for us. He led us in scoring. He did a lot of good things. Markel has put a lot of time in and he deserves what he got. He improved his shooting a lot. He put the time in.”

Union (17-6) finished tied for second in the section with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at 7-3. The Scotties beat Quigley Catholic, 78-60, to open the WPIAL tournament, but dropped a 66-55 decision to Clairton in the quarterfinals.

“Clairton was good. Obviously, they showed it by beating Lincoln Park. It was a very solid year for us. This senior group worked hard and worked hard to get where they were,” Smialowski said. “We’re definitely taking a hit (with graduation), there’s no doubt about it. These kids work hard, though. The cupboard definitely isn’t bare. It’s going to be tough with OLSH and Lincoln Park back in the section next year. A goal for us is to get back to the playoffs.”
