NEW CASTLE —
Mohawk High junior McKenzie Stelter is a WPIAL champion.
Stelter won gold with a score of 419.85 at the WPIAL Class AA Diving Championships at South Park High School.
Moon’s Heather Lonkert finished second with a score of 417.65 and South Park’s Grace Klimek was third at 394.65.
The 11-dive competition was close the entire way through, with Stelter and Lonkert locked in a tight battle. Stelter scored well on five straight dives in the preliminary round to hold a 3.85 point lead. But Lonkert responded in the semifinal round of three dives, overtaking Stelter by 9.5 points.
Heading into the final round of three dives, Stelter cut the deficit to 2.15 with one dive to go. In her final dive, she nailed a reverse one and a half twist for 43.20 points to take the crown.
Stelter now will make her third appearance in the PIAA Championships on March 13 at Bucknell.

WPIAL Softball Playoffs: Neshannock rolls over Frazier

Yesterday, Frazier felt pretty good about scoring a run in the top of the first against the Lady Lancers. However, Neshannock responded with four of its own in the bottom of the frame and stormed to a 9-1 triumph in a WPIAL Class A semifinal at North Allegheny High School.

Wilmington High’s Jon Yohman turned in a golden effort Saturday. Yohman captured gold medals in the shot put and the discus events at the District 10, Class AA Track and Field Championships at Harbor Creek High’s Paul J. Weitz Stadium.

NHL Playoffs: Ottawa topples Pens in two OT
Colin Greening wore six stitches on his left cheek, and a wide smile, after Ottawa’s double overtime playoff victory against Pittsburgh. Greening ended the longest game of this year’s postseason with a backhander off a rebound 7:39 into the second OT, and the Senators’ 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins cut their series deficit to 2-1 tonight.
