Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Aug. 26

NEW CASTLE — The Neshannock High girls tennis team opened the season in strong fashion yesterday.

The Lady Lancers captured all five matches in an easy 5-0 WPIAL Section 2-AA victory over Ellwood City Lincoln at Pearson Park.

Alex Huffman (No. 1), Cecelia Weingart (No. 2) and Meg Johntony (No. 3) secured singles wins for Neshannock.

Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta (No. 1) and Erin Warvell/Anna Warvell (No. 2) notched doubles triumphs for the Lady Lancers.

Following are the results:

Neshannock 5, Ellwood City 0


1. Alex Huffman (N) def. Samantha Shodd 6-0, 6-3.

2. Cecelia Weingart (N) def. Lauren Stiles 6-4, 6-4.

3. Meg Johntony (N) def. Jodi Iddings 6-0, 6-4.

Boys golf

Mohawk falls

Anthony Bartolone fired a 46 for Mohawk in a 229-238 Section 5, Division 2 loss to Riverside on the back nine at Mohawk Trails.

Andy Ferrucci was next for the Warriors (0-2, 0-3) with a 47, while Caleb Pierog and Bryant Croach each shot a 48. Alex Scurlock contributed a 49.

’Hounds edge foe

Nate Anthony carded a 40 to lead Wilmington to a 183-185 nonregion win over Brookfield (Ohio) on the front nine at Tanglewood.

Matt Zimmer followed with a 43 for the Greyhounds (6-2) and Collin Duffy added a 47. Luke Lofton supplied a 53.

Lancers roll

Neshannock notched an easy 204-250 Section 5, Division 2 decision over Ellwood City on the back nine at Del Mar.

Carmen Oliva posted a 36 for the Lancers (3-0, 3-1) and Chris Egbert was next with a 37. Matt Manos tallied a 42, Marissa Kirkwood fired a 44 and Mike Rozzi recorded a 45.

Blake Beatrice paced the Wolverines with a 47, Jake Varratti scored a 49 and Derek Baker was next with a 50. Brian Hudson supplied a 51 and Alex Krosovic delivered a 53.
