Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Sept. 25

NEW CASTLE — Neshannock missed out on sending its doubles teams to the WPIAL  tournament.

The tandems of Alex Huffman/Anna Warvell and Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta dropped their quarterfinal matches at the Section 2-AA Girls Doubles Tennis Tournament at Pearson Park, coming up short in their bid for a spot in the WPIAL tournament at Keystone Oaks next week.

“I thought both teams competed very well,” Neshannock coach Chuck Dess said. “Both matches were 10-8. The match could have easily swung our way. I was extremely proud of the girls. It gives us a few more matches under our belt before closing out the season and heading into the playoffs.”

Huffman/Warvell entered the 14-team tournament seeded fourth and defeated a team from Beaver Falls 10-1 in the round of 16. The Lady Lancers duo were defeated by a Riverside tandem 10-8 in the quarterfinals.

Giangiuli/Acosta were ranked seventh to open the tourney and beat a Riverside team 10-2 in the round of 16 before falling to the second-seeded  Blackhawk tandem 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
