Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Sept. 16

NEW CASTLE — The Neshannock High girls soccer team is positioning itself to make some noise in the playoffs later in the season.

The Lady Lancers (3-0-2 section, 4-0-3 overall) battled defending WPIAL Section 1-A champion Sewickley Academy to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Sewickley.

Goalie Madison McHale stopped nine shots for Neshannock, while Rachel Iorio, Regan Moorhouse, Natalie Sheen, Chandler Moorhouse and Alyssa DeMatteo were credited for their defensive work.

The Lady Panthers are ranked among the top five Class A schools in the WPIAL by the Post-Gazette.


Lady Spartans win

Laurel rolled to a 25-6, 25-8, 25-12 nonsection sweep of visiting Rochester to improve to 4-1 overall.

Kristan Fedrizzi led the way with 26 points with seven aces, while Mackenzie Mraz chipped in 14 kills and three aces. Makenna Natale added nine points with three aces.

The Lady Spartans won the JV match as well, 25-3 25-11.

Stephanie Telesz delivered 21 points with 12 aces, while Emily Gibson posted 10 points with nine aces.

Shenango wins

Shenango needed an extra game to top South Side Beaver, winning 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-22 in non-section action.

With the victory, the Lady Wildcats improved to 5-0 on the season.

Christina Rapone led the way with 24 assists, while Angelina Sibeto totaled three aces, Katie Lacey tacked on 18 kills, Jade Esposito had 23 digs and Jacqui Baker posted seven blocks.

In JV action, Shenango won 25-4, 25-7.

Caitlyn Schnell and Brooke Chieze combined for six kills, while Sarah Herb chipped in 10 assists.

Lady Lancers roll

Gina Zingaro scored 18 points to lead Neshannock past Beaver County Christian, 25-11, 25-23, 25-13 in WPIAL Section 3-AA action.

Madison Altmyer chipped in with nine kills and seven points, while Taylor Frank added four aces, six kills, eight points and 26 assists and Jordan Wethli three aces, 11 kills and 11 points.

The Lady Lancers are 1-2 in the section, 2-2 overall.

Neshannock lost the JV match, 25-11, 25-20, 15-10.

Boys Soccer

’Hounds prevail

Wilmington remained undefeated on the season with a 2-1 victory over visiting Franklin in a District 10, Region 2 match.

Wilmington is now 1-0 in the region, 3-0 overall, while Franklin slipped to 0-1, 3-2.

Matt Balczon had a goal and assist and Travis Brumbaugh added a goal for the Greyhounds.

Derek Nichols had seven saves for the winners.

Girls Tennis

Lady Lancers cruise

Neshannock (4-3 in Section 2-AA, 4-3 overall) cruised to an easy 4-1 road victory over Ellwood City at Ewing Park.

The Lady Lancers picked up victories from Cecelia Weingart (No. 1 Singles) and Meg Johntony (No. 2 singles), as well as doubles tandems Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta (No. 1) and Erin Warvell/Anna Warvell (No. 2).
