College Basketball: Former Lady ’Canes star hired as assistant at IUP

NEW CASTLE — New Castle High graduate and basketball standout Ryenn Micaletti is climbing the coaching ladder.

Micaletti has been hired as an assistant coach on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball staff.

A Point Park University women’s basketball assistant for the last two years, the Lady Pioneers went 48-14 overall, including two NAIA Division II national tournament appearances, two conference tournament championships and two qualifications for the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.

Micaletti came to Point Park for her first coaching job in the college ranks after being a four-year player and senior captain at Seton Hill University. The Lady Pioneers’ head coach, Tony Grenek, was an assistant there when she was a player for the Lady Griffins. Grenek recruited Micaletti to Seton Hill from New Castle and then brought her to his coaching staff at Point Park.

A solid final season with the Lady ’Canes made the decisiont to recruit Micaletti easy for Grenek. Micaletti scored 215 points for an average of 7.1 per game.

New Castle finished 28-2, winning the WPIAL Class AAAA championship and competing in the PIAA playoffs.

“Ryenn is a tremendous basketball coach, a fantastic role model and an even greater person,” Grenek said in a press release. “I feel like I’m handing my daughter away in marriage. I am sad to lose her as my assistant, but I am so grateful she is getting this great opportunity. IUP, the Crimson Hawks women’s basketball program and coach (Tom) McConnell are getting a gem in coach Micaletti.”

Micaletti’s roles at Point Park were to assist in all aspects of the program with focuses on running the Lady Pioneers’ strength and conditioning program and academic support.

Tom McConnell was hired as head coach of NCAA Division II IUP in June. He is the brother of Pitt women’s basketball coach and former WNBA player Suzie McConnell-Serio.

“I think we hit a home run in bringing Ryenn to the IUP women’s basketball program,” McConnell. “She’s a very talented and bright basketball coach and recruiter who will be a tremendous role model for our players.

“Ryenn will be able to provide valuable insights to our players from her playing career at Seton Hill,” McConnell said. “ From the first minute I met with her, I knew I wanted her to be a part of IUP women’s basketball.”
