High School Football: Mayo resigns as Shenango coach

NEW CASTLE — Ryan Mayo has resigned as football coach at Shenango High School.

“It was just time,” Mayo said last night of his letter of resignation. “I’ve got three little ones at home. The job takes a lot of time off your hands.”

Mayo was hired as the Wildcats coach at the age of 28 in March 2007, and posted a 21-34 mark in his six seasons with the program. He also was hired as an English teacher at the school.

A 1997 Western Beaver High graduate, Mayo spent five years as an assistant football coach for the Golden Beavers, including two seasons as co-defensive coordinator. He also served as a varsity assistant basketball coach at the school from 2004 to 2007.

Mayo played football at Lafayette College in Easton and spent three successful seasons as the Leopards’ starting fullback. He was named to the All-Patriot League’s first team in 2000 and captured the Beaver County Hall of Fame Dick Kadis Award in 2001 as the area’s top collegiate athlete.

The Wildcats failed to make the playoffs in Mayo’s six seasons. Shenango struggled this season with a 2-6 Big Seven Conference record, 3-6 overall.

“I appreciate the opportunity the past six years,” Mayo said. “It’s been a great experience overall.”

Mayo’s resignation will not become official until the next meeting of the Shenango Area School Board, scheduled for Monday.
