NEW CASTLE —
A pair of Lawrence County high school baseball teams received their playoff assignments yesterday.
Laurel and Union high are the lone area representatives in the WPIAL playoffs, which open Monday.
The Scotties (12-5) will open Monday’s doubleheader at 2 p.m. when they square off against North Catholic (10-4) in Class A action. The Spartans (9-7) follow at 4:30 p.m. against Washington (11-5) in a Class AA contest.
Both games are set for Chippewa Park.
Tenth-seeded Union finished 9-3 in Section 3, dropping all three of its league matchups to section-champion Western Beaver. The seventh-seeded Trojans shared the Section 4 crown with Riverview with identical 7-1 marks. The teams split the season series to share the title.
Joe Salmen, a senior, paces the Scotties on the mound with a 4-0 record in 34 2/3 innings pitched. He has a 1.15 earned run average as well.
Wayne Seamans, also a senior, owns a .438 batting average to lead Union with a team-best nine steals. Senior Carrington Bell leads the Scotties with two homers and 19 RBIs.
The winner advances to meet the survivor of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart-Monessen matchup at a time, date and site to be determined.
Tenth-seeded Laurel finished in third place in Section 5 with a 9-5 record. The Spartans clinched the playoff spot with a 7-0 victory over Neshannock on Monday. The Little Prexies are seeded seventh.
Brandon Ritchie, a senior and George Washington recruit, leads Laurel on the mound. Ritchie is 5-1 with a 1.56 earned run average with 54 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings pitched.
Josh Dando, a junior, guides the Spartans at the plate with a .463 average.
Washington and Brownsville shared the Section 2 championship with identical 10-4 records.
The winner moves on to meet the survivor of the Beaver-Bentworth battle at a time, date and site to be determined.
All three Section 3 playoff participants — Beaver, Laurel and Riverside — are on the same side of the bracket. The Panthers are the defending PIAA champions and WPIAL runner-up.
