Video: Pittsburgh Pirates president makes stop in town

NEW CASTLE — Nittany Lions’ pride roared at the New Englander last night.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ president and Penn State University alumnus Frank Coonelly delivered the keynote speech for the Lawrence County Chapter of Penn State Alumni Association event, with all proceeds going to the chapter’s scholarship fund.

Each August the chapter awards scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who will begin their freshman year that fall.

Nick Colella, a New Castle graduate and basketball star, was honored for outstanding achievement during his Penn State basketball career.

A walk-on during the 2010-2011 season, Colella played in 26 games this season, and started six Big Ten games. He was awarded a scholarship for his final season.

Coonelly graduated with high distinction from Penn State  with a bachelor’s degree in public service. He earned his jurisdoctorate from Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. He was named president of the Pirates in 2007. He leads the Pirates’ senior management group and is accountable for the team’s success both on and off the field.
