Spring Sports: A roundup of local action for April 25

NEW CASTLE — Two Lawrence County track and field stars won gold at the Midwestern Athletic Conference invitational yesterday at Mars High School.

New Castle High’s Antonio Rudolph and Ellwood City Lincoln’s Angela McCowin both placed first in individual track events.

Rudolph fended off the pack in the 400 with a winning time of 51.37, while McCowin bested the competition in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.71.

More than 20 schools competed.

West Allegheny was the team champion on both the boys and girls sides.

For the boys, Mohawk led Lawrence County teams, finishing fifth with 35 points. West Allegheny won the title with 921/2 points.

On the girls side, Ellwood City was fifth with 42 points. West Allegheny again won the team title with 98 points.

Weather delayed start times for many events by more than an hour, with the meet concluding after 10:30 p.m.

Results from field events were delayed and unavailable at press time.  They will be available in tomorrow’s edition.

Boys Tennis

Neshannock ended its season strong in preparation for its upcoming postseason run.

The Lancers cruised to a 5-0 Section 2-AA win over Ellwood City at the North Beaver Tennis Center.

Now, third-place Neshannock (8-4, 10-4) will await its first-round playoff opponent, expected to be announced Monday with matchups slated to be begin on May 6.

After graduating 12 seniors from an undefeated team a season ago, the Lancers still found a way back to the playoffs with Max Watters as the team’s only returning starter.

“We basically had a new team this year and the guys did an unbelievable job this year,” Neshannock coach Chuck Dess said.

The doubles team of Mike Maciarello and Connor Richards (No. 1) ended the regular season 14-1, with their only loss coming at the MAC tournament.
