Photos, Video, Story: Neshannock falls short in PIAA title game

(Continued)

UNIVERSITY PARK —

Video highlights from the PIAA title game.

CONTROL PROBLEMS

For the game, Shaffer gave up six hits and seven runs — all earned — with seven walks and four strikeouts. She threw a total of 121 pitches.

Cassidy Burrelli worked 2/3 innings in relief for Neshannock. Burrelli, just a freshman, gave up three hits and six runs — all earned — with three walks and no strikeouts.

“What I was worried about happening, happened,” Kimmel said. “We come down here with a young pitcher and between the two pitchers, I think we had 10 walks and hit batter.

“You can’t have that and expect to win. You have no chance. It was good experience for our young pitchers, though.”

Said Reiser, “The girls were patient at the plate. We made their pitchers throw strikes and that was the key to the game.”

CRUISE CONTROL

While Neshannock pitchers had trouble throwing strikes, Williams Valley hurler Cassidy Pinchorski was baffling Lady Lancers hitters. Pinchrski held Neshannock hitless through 4 1/3 innings.

“She varied the speed there and threw some changeups,” Kimmel said of Pinchorski. “She was faster, but she wasn’t that fast; it was their day.

“She got up three runs and then they got four more. That made it tough. That was it, it was pretty much over right there. They have a very nice team.”

Shaffer broke up the no-hit bid with a clean single with one out in the fifth. It was just Neshannock’s third baserunner to that point — one came on a walk and another on an error. But Rachel Iorio followed by hitting a rocket to Williams Valley first baseman Haley Nestor, who snagged it and stepped on first to complete the inning-ending double play.

“Our batting wasn’t there today, but some days that happens,” Shaffer said.

PUTTING IT AWAY

The Lady Vikings plated six more runs in the sixth inning for a 13-run lead.

“They wanted to finish it off when it was 7-0. Then they kept saying we’re going to finish this off as the game wore on,” Reiser said. “I never envisioned a game like 13-0.”

Pinchorski (14-4) went the distance to earn the win. She gave up just three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jamie Graziani and Marissa DeMatteo notched two-out singles off Pinchorski in the sixth. DeMatteo’s was a line drive that struck Pinchorski’s foot and sailed into foul territory across the third-base line.

After a brief time to check on Pinchorski by the Lady Vikings, she got the final batter on a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 count to end the game and complete the stunning victory.
