NEW CASTLE —
The Neshannock High golf team came out swinging in its season opener.
The Lancers cruised past Riverside, 203-232, in a WPIAL Section 5-AA showdown on the front nine of Castle Hills golf course. Matt Cioffi paced Neshannock with an even-par 36, while Max Watters followed with a 38. Mike Maciarello and Chris Egbert each tallied a 41, and Marcus Giangiuli carded a 47.
“We have three starters back and three new guys in there,” Neshannock coach Mike Kirkwood said. “It’s hard to tell how they (the new guys) are going to respond. You try to put pressure on them in practice to see how they do, but it’s different (in a match). Overall, I thought they did well, but we had a few guys who just got back from vacation, so their swings weren’t exactly where they needed to be. There’s definitely room to improve.”
Shenango dominated a Section 5-AA clash with Ellwood City Lincoln.
Lucas Villani led the Wildcats to a 203-250 victory. Villani was the medalist with a 35. Darren Carone chipped in with a 40, and Matt DeAngelo hit a 41. Rocco Firorilli carded a 42, and Ryan Smith registered a 45.
Michael Rue led Ellwood City with a 42. Derek Baker was next with a 47, R.J. Leisie recorded a 51 and Justin Baney and Blake Beatrice each posted a 55.
Wilmington struggled in its season debut.
The Greyhounds finished fifth out of five teams in a District 10, Region 2 match at Tam O’Shanter golf course. Wilmington registered a score of 429, trailing Sharpsville (400), Sharon (375), West Middlesex (335) and first-place Hickory (330).
Colin Duffy carded the lowest score for the Greyhounds with a 104. Shane McQuiston was next with a 105. Josh Bonnici recorded a 109, and Ethan Seeber hit a 111.
Nick Vuich of Hickory and Matt Dogan of West Middlesex shared medalist honors as each shot a 78.
