COLLEGE HOOPS: McNees, Sams to compete in postseason tournaments

Steve McNees and Jaleesa Sams are not playing in either the NCAA men’s or women’s basketball tournaments.

However, both former Lawrence County high school basketball stars will be competing in postseason tournaments nonethleless.

McNees, a Shenango High product, will lead the University of Akron men’s squad into the 16-team College Basketball Invitational. The Zips (24-10) will host Wisconsin-Green Bay (21-12) at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

McNees is averaging 8.3 points per game and has made a team-high 67 3-pointers for Akron, which has tallied five straight 20-win seasons.

The Zips suffered an 81-75 overtime loss to Ohio on Saturday in the Mid-American Conference championship game, although McNees proved to be a hero of the tournament with numerous game-altering shots.

Sams, a New Castle graduate, will help North Carolina A&T; through the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

The Lady Aggies (21-10) will play at Wake Forest on Thursday.

Sams is averaging 11.1 points a game and has started 23 of the 26 games in which she has played.
