Law enforcement plans youth tournament

NEW CASTLE — A youth basketball tournament featuring food, music and no entry fees is set for Aug. 3 and 4.

The 3-on-3 tournament, to take place at New Castle High School, is sponsored by the Lawrence County District Attorney’s office and the New Castle Police Department.

It is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 19 who are residents of Lawrence County and enrolled in local school districts. Trophies will be awarded for the top three teams in each division.

Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa said the tournament is funded with money forfeited to his office following drug convictions.

New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said he will use funds provided to his department through a Police Leading Active Youth grant. This is intended to bolster relations between the department and community.

“We pooled our resources for this basketball tournament, to give something back to the children of the community,” Lamancusa said.

“Other places hold 3-on-3 tournaments, but there is always a cost and that can be prohibitive,” he continued. “Since there are children involved, we didn’t want a registration fee to limit their participation.”

Lamancusa added the city school district has provided its gym, auxiliary gym and parking lot at no cost, and several area churches, businesses and organizations have made donations.

Ralph Blundo, New Castle’s head basketball coach, will offer a welcoming comments. Officials and staff will be law enforcement officers from Lawrence County. The age divisions will be:

•Red — ages 10 to 13

•White — ages 14 to 16

•Blue — ages 17 to 19.

All teams will be limited to a maximum of five players with 12 teams per division.

Games will begin at 9 a.m. and, on tournament day, all athletes must report to the school no later than 8 a.m.

The registration deadline is July 26. Registration forms and liability waivers are available at the front desk of the New Castle Police Department, corner of East and North streets. Teams will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

Additional information is available by contacting the district attorney’s office at (724) 656-1916.
