WPIAL Softball Playoffs: Neshannock, Shenango draw byes

NEW CASTLE — The Neshannock and Shenango high softball teams got a reward yesterday.

The WPIAL announced the softball playoff pairings and the Lady Lancers and Lady Wildcats both received a first-round bye in Class A.

Neshannock (13-2) claimed the No. 1 seed in Class A. The Lady Lancers won the Section 4-A title outright with a 10-3 win over South Side Beaver on Wednesday. The Lady Rams (13-3), seeded No. 7, took third place in the section.

Shenango (14-3) finished second in the section behind Neshannock and earned the No. 4 seed.

Last year, the Lady Wildcats were seeded 12th despite finishing tied for second in the league with South Side Beaver. Shenango pulled a first-round upset of fifth-seeded Sto-Rox before falling in the quarterfinals to Frazier.

Neshannock will meet the winner of Thursday’s Vincentian Academy-Sewickley Academy game. Shenango will square off against the survivor of Thursday’s Burgettstown-Frazier contest. The time, date and site of Neshannock and Shenango’s quarterfinal-round matchup have yet to be determined.

Neshannock and Shenango are on the same side of the bracket and could meet in the semifinals. The Lady Lancers are ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Lady Wildcats are ranked No. 2.

Laurel (8-6) reached the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season. The Lady Spartans finished third in Section 5-AA.

Laurel, seeded 13th, will square off against fourth-seeded Keystone Oaks (11-4) at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairhaven Park. The Lady Golden Eagles are ranked No. 4 in the WPIAL in Class AA by the Post-Gazette.

New Castle (8-3) finished second in Section 1-AAA action and received the No. 8 seed in Triple-A. The Lady ’Canes are in the district playoffs for the fourth-straight season.

New Castle will oppose ninth-seeded West Allegheny (10-5) at 5 p.m. Thursday at North Allegheny.

Ellwood City Lincoln (7-5) placed third in Section 1-AAA play, tying for the spot with Central Valley and Ambridge. All three tams were 5-5 in league play.

The Lady Wolverines will meet Central Valley (6-7) in a preliminary-round game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at North Allegheny. The teams split the season series. Ellwood won at home (6-0) and lost on the road (8-6).

The winner receives the No. 16 seed and advances to meet top-seeded Greensburg Salem (13-1) at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gateway.

Antonio Brown rolled up to the dorms at Saint Vincent College last week in a Mercedes conversion van. It’s fitting in a way. Five years into a blossoming career, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver is playing the role of dad — OK, maybe slightly older brother — to a group long on talent but short on experience.
