NEW CASTLE — The stars were out in full force at the North-South all-star games.

The annual event at Shenango High School pitted some of the best high school basketball seniors from the northern and southern schools of western Pennsylvania on Saturday night.

The North took the boys game, 78-70. Khalil Hopson of Sharon took home MVP honors for the North with 15 points. Hickory’s Matt Votino was next with 11 points.

For the South, Markel Peace led the way with 15 points and was named the team’s MVP.

Peace also shined in the 3-point shooting contest, besting Farrell’s Jason Page 19-12 in the final round.

On the girls side, the North again prevailed over the South, 69-60.

Sharpsville’s McKenzie Popatak paced the field with 13 points, but team MVP honors went to Farrell’s Johntae Scott, who tallied 10 points and eight assists.

Ellwood City’s Asia Borders recorded 11 points for the South and was named MVP of her team. Shenango’s Victoria Weinschenk was next with seven points, including two 3-pointers.

Lakeview’s Casey Stringer edged Union’s Marissa Heaney, 12-9, in the 3-point contest. Heaney outdueled her twin sister Miranda to reach the finals.

The North-South all-star games were created and organized by current Shenango girls coach Brian Turk. This is third year of organizing the event at the school.

“It gets better every year,” he said. “We had great attendance and support this year. It was a good night of basketball for sure. We went to 12-minute periods so everybody got plenty of playing time and really enjoyed themselves.”
