NEW CASTLE —
Neshannock High golfer Mike Maciarello turned in a strong effort in adverse conditions yesterday.
Maciarello, a senior, fired a 3-under 33 to lift the Lancers to a 191-269 WPIAL Section 5, Division 2 victory over Ellwood City Lincoln at Castle Hills Golf Course.
“It was pouring out and I asked around if we should take a break for a bit, but the kids said no, they’re already wet,” Neshannock coach Mike Kirkwood said. “Maciarello felt good and the weather didn’t bother him.”
Maciarello notched birdies on holes 1, 7 and 8. He had an eagle putt on 9, but three-putted on the hole.
“He’s not the biggest kid in the world, but he hits it far and straight,” Kirkwood said of Maciarello. “It’s surprising how far he hits it for his size.
“The putter put himself in good shape. He made the putts he needed to make.”
Matt Cioffi was next with a 35 for Neshannock (3-0 section, 3-1 overall), while Max Watters contributed a 38. Chris Egbert carded a 42 and Carmen Oliva added a 43.
Alex Krosovic paced the Wolverines with a 49 and Blake Beatrice followed with a 52. R.J. Leslie notched a 53, Derek Baker tallied a 57 and Ryan Buzard scored a 58.
