Fall Sports Report: A roundup of local action

NEW CASTLE — Shane Wilson and Ben Armando propelled the Laurel High boys golf team to a win on Friday.

Wilson and Armando both fired a 39, pacing the Spartans to a 206-257 WPIAL Section 5, Division II triumph over Mohawk at Mohawk Trails Golf Course.

Nick Peluso was next for Laurel (3-0) with a 40, while Cody Crawford carded a 42. Brady Crawford contributed a 46.

The Warriors’ Aaron DeSantis was the medalist with a 37. Anthony Bartolone was next with a 51 for Mohawk (0-3) and Samson Needler added a 53. Alex Scurlock notched a 57 and Caleb Piercy scored a 59.

Girls tennis

Wilmington rolls

The Lady Greyhounds cruised to a 5-0 District 10, Region 1-AA win over Sharon.

Katie Chase (No. 1), Lauren Barber (No. 2) and Alanna Elliott (No. 3) earned singles wins for Wilmington (1-2 overall, 1-2 region).

The doubles tandems of Rebeccah Swerdlow/Lydea Kraynak (No. 1) and Nikki McCown/Alexis Donati (No. 2) also claimed victories.

2. Lauren Barber (W) def. Rebecca Rueberger 6-4, 1-0 (forfeit).

1. Rebeccah Swerdlow/Lydea Kraynak (W) def. Abrianna Dellibovi/Marissa Monnin  7-6 (8-6), 7-5.

2. Nikki McCown/Alexis Donati (W) def. Alex Hughey/Bonita Hall 6-2, 6-4.


1. Cheyenne George (W) won 8-2.

2. Holly Vernon/Kaitlyn Meyers (W) won 8-0.

    The Neshannock High softball team continued to roll Saturday. Madison Shaffer tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout to lift the Lady Lancers to a 6-0 WPIAL Section 4-A home win over Shenango.

    The Shenango High baseball team hit a home run with kids at Children’s Hospital. Led by Tyler Booher and Anthony Prestopine, the Wildcats spent the last two months conducting a toy drive to benefit the young patients of the Pittsburgh facility. They ended up with about 200 items.

    The New Castle High baseball team found a way to pull out a win yesterday. The Red Hurricane scratched a run across in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 12-11 WPIAL Section 1-AAAA win over North Hills at Flaherty Field.

    Rich Serignese is no stranger to pressure on the baseball field. The Neshannock High sophomore twice defeated WPIAL Class AA champion and PIAA runner-up Beaver a year ago, so facing a team that put up eye-popping numbers the night before was a piece of cake.

    Ellwood City Lincoln’s Dillon Horgan tossed a complete-game gem yesterday. Horgan scattered nine hits to lift the visiting Wolverines to a WPIAL Section 5-AA victory over Laurel, 6-2. Horgan (2-3) allowed two earned runs with three walks and six strikeouts to pick up the victory.

    Laurel High has found its man. Brian Cooper replaces Pat Cuba at the helm of the Spartans football program. Cuba resigned last month after leading the Spartans to a 7-3 record and the program’s first playoff appearance since 2009.

    Hitting was on display for the Neshannock High softball team yesterday. The Lady Lancers banged out 10 hits in a 14-8 WPIAL Section 4-A home win over South Side Beaver.
