NEW CASTLE —
Thirty-six Lawrence County athletes competed in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games at Penn State University.
The games feature three days of intense competition in aquatics, athletics, basketball, bowling, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, softball and tennis.
Four gold medals were handed out to area athletes. Matt Blake won gold in the 25-meter butterfly swimming race. He also took silver in the 50-meter freestyle and placed fifth in the 25-meter freestyle.
A basketball team made up of Harry Allen, Jeff Foreman, Paul Williams, Travis Williams, Andrae McElroy, Ricky Pelline, Jeff Mitchell, Chris Podbielski and Mike Podbielski won gold. They were part of a five-on-five team.
Brennon Lacko earned a gold medal in golf (level four), while the team of Lauren Firm, Andrea Snider, Kiley Soltera and Billie Jo Wellman won gold in girls traditional team bowling.
Winning silver medals were: Mikey Vaneman (25-meter assisted swim, 15-meter assisted swim and the 15-meter unassisted swim); Victor Huff (basketball — individual skills); Stephen Doak and Dave Dotson (bowling — unified doubles team); Travis Jones and Chuck Jones (bowling — unified doubles team) and Brandon McManos, Ritchie Fritz and Richard Fritz (bowling — unified team).
Winning bronze medals were: Christina Plotts (25-meter freestyle); Barb Thompson (25-meter freestyle); Jill Byers, Jennifer Pitzer, Morgan Wimer, Faith Foreman and Alex Baney (basketball — 3-on-3 team); R.J. Dickson (golf — level four) and Jim Heasley and Jeff Allay (golf — level two partners).
Plotts also finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle and sixth in the 25-meter backstroke. Thompson was fourth 50-meter freestyle, and Patti Lingo placed sixth in bowling — singles.

PIAA Track Championships: Wilmington's Yohman wins discus gold
Wilmington High track and field standout Jon Yohman turned in a golden effort Saturday. Yohman claimed a gold medal in the discus with a toss of 177-10 in Class AA at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

District 10 Softball: Wilmington girls get past Titusville
The Wilmington High softball team exacted some revenge yesterday. The Lady Greyhounds scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning, claiming a 4-3 District 10, Class AA semifinal-round win over Titusville at Penn State-Behrend.

While he doesn't have much coaching experience, 26-year-old Craig Hannon has been successful in his four years coaching basketball. The Union High and Westminster College graduate steps in as the new boys coach at Girard (Ohio) High, replacing Nolan Cubellis, who resigned after two seasons and a 16-25 record.

Former ’Hounds’ football stars suffers possible stroke
Former Wilmington High football star Derrick Burns was in stable condition at a Pittsburgh hospital last night after falling ill. A local church with which he is affiliated asked for prayers yesterday for the University of Pittsburgh sophomore running back after he suffered a possible mild stroke.
