Fall Sports: A roundup of action from October 16

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel High girls cross country team continued its march toward the WPIAL Championships in impressive fashion yesterday.

The Lady Spartans placed seven runners in the top 31 — including five in the top 15 — to win the 10-team Freedom Invitational at Brush Creek Park by outdistancing Bishop Canevin 43-63. Freeport was in third with 64 points.

Alison Filer paced Laurel with a second-place finish at 20:45, while Mia Muraca placed eighth with a time of 21:49.

Katie McClelland and Stephanie Kaminski were 11th and 12th in 22:14 and 22:29, respectively. Kristin Dicks finished in 14th with a time of 22:45.

In the boys race, the Spartans placed fourth with 171 points behind Hopewell (85), Beaver (94) and Riverview (139).

Clint Glenn was the top Laurel finisher with in 12th place in a time of 18:47, while Bryan Taylor took 17th in 19:01.

Josh Hassett was the third Spartans runner across the finish line in 37th place in 20:08 and Austin McClelland ran the course in 20:44 for 53rd place. Jacob Cahall finished in 21:41 for 69th place.

Volleyball

Shenango wins


The Lady Wildcats earned a 26-24, 25-22, 25-19 nonsection victory over visiting Ellwood City Lincoln.

Jade Esposito finished with 12 digs to pace Shenango (13-1), while Irene Koury added seven kills and Jacqui Baker posted four blocks.

Emily Brown handed out 14 assists and Shaelyn Barrett slammed home eight kills for the Lady Wolverines (7-7). Amber Leech tallied 16 digs, while Susie Blyth served up three aces and Allie McKelvey chipped in seven blocks.

Shenango also won the JV match 25-11, 25-15.

Sarah Herb had 13 assists and Angelina Sibeto contributed five digs. Marie Gonsar posted five kills.

Mohawk loses

The Lady Warriors dropped a 25-19, 25-10, 25-23 Section 1-AA decision to host Beaver.

Samantha Carr led Mohawk (3-9, 5-10) with 10 digs and five kills, while Maria Fleck added seven kills.

Malea Tress (eight) and Jessica Meyer (six) combined for 14 assists.

Ashley McConnell served up three aces as Mohawk lost the JV match 25-19, 26-24.
