Fall Sports: A roundup of action for Sept. 24

NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk High girls volleyball team bounced back in a 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-9 nonsection win over visiting Laurel.

McKenzie Stelter led the Lady Warriors (4-4) with 17 digs and three kills, while Malea Tress finished with 18 assists and four kills. Maria Fleck chipped in 14 kills, four aces and three blocks.

Also for Mohawk, Erin Giancola (five), Ashley McDonnell (four) and Jessica Meyer (four) combined for 13 kills.

Mackenzie Mraz led Laurel (6-2) with 13 points (five aces) and 11 kills, while Allyson Kendall chipped in 17 digs and eight points. Ellen Shaffer tacked on five kills and five blocks.

Giancola and Riah Yost evenly split eight kills and McDonnell handed out five assists as Mohawk also won the JV match, 25-17, 25-19.

Laurel’s Stephanie Telesz scored five points and three aces for the JV team.

Boys golf

Wildcats win

Shenango improved to 7-3 in Section 5-AA with a 206-226 road win over Ellwood City Lincoln at Del Mar Golf Course.

Rocco Fiorilli led the Wildcats with a 39, while Lucas Villani carded a 40, Paul Turco added a 41 and Tyler Booher and Ryan Smith contributed 43s.

Derek Baker and Justin Baney finished with identical 44s to lead Ellwood City, while Blake Beatrice (45), Brian Hudson (46) and Jake Varrati (47) also scored.

Scotties sweep

Union (219) eased past Reynolds (229) and Wilmington (257) in a tri-match on Tanglewood’s front nine.

Jacob Jendrysik secured medalist honors with a 38 for the Scotties (7-6), while Cole Gorgacz and Austin Burk carded 42s. Jeremy Rice posted a 48 and Jeff Schindel added a 49.

Collin Duffy led Wilmington with a 42.

Girls tennis

Neshannock routs foe

Cecelia Weingart (No. 1) and Alex Huffman (No. 3) rolled to identical 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles action as the Lady Lancers (6-3) picked up the easy home victory over New Brighton at Pearson Park.

Meg Johntony (No. 2) had to work a little harder to secure her win at second singles, rebounding from a 6-4 loss before posting 6-3, 7-6 victories in the final two games.

The doubles tandems of Gabby Giangiuli/Maria Acosta (No. 1) and Erin Warvell/Anna Warvell (No. 2) also recorded victories.

Girls soccer

Lady Greyhounds roll

Kyler Lum and Leann Wynder combined for six goals and five assists as Wilmington cruised to an 11-0 District 10, Region 1-A victory over visiting Sharpsville.

Wynder led the way with three goals and three assists, while Lum chipped in three tallies and a pair of assists for the Lady Greyhounds (3-0, 4-3-1).

Alison Mayes, Rachael Huff, Anna Hartwell, Mackenzie Smith and Madison Huff were credited with one goal apiece, while Maggie Pusateri and Hartwell equally split four assists. Mayes and Jillian Mickle each added an assist.

Ally Hahn recorded eight saves in goal for Wilmington.

Lady Warriors win

Mohawk scored three times in the first half and withstood a furious Neshannock comeback in the second half to pick up a 3-1 WPIAL Section 1-A home win.

Controlling play in the opening half, the Lady Warriors outshot the Lady Lancers 9-5, but Neshannock (4-1-2, 5-1-3) turned the tables in the closing 40 minutes, posting a 12-3 advantage in shots.

Sydne Slingluff scored the Lady Lancers’ lone goal, while Madison McHale recorded 10 saves.
