NEW CASTLE —
The Lady Lancers plated 14 first-inning runs to cruise to a Section 4-A home win over Aliquippa.
Neshannock, the defending PIAA Class AA champions which dropped to Class A this year, added three runs in the second. The game was stopped after 2 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.
The Lady Lancers (2-0, 2-0) pounded out 12 hits. They have outscored the opposition, 35-1.
Madison Shaffer (2-0) picked up the win, pitching one inning. Shaffer didn’t allow a hit with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Lady Quips didn’t manage a hit off either Shaffer or Cassidy Burrelli, who went the final two innings. Burrelli struck out three batters as well.
Madison Altmyer and Marissa DeMatteo posted two hits and three RBIs each for Neshannock. Rayanna Furst added two hits.
Beaver Falls 2
The Lady Warriors scored four runs in the third inning to pull away for a Section 5-AA road win over Beaver Falls.
Mohawk took a 1-0 lead in the second and pushed it to 5-0 going to the bottom of the third. The Lady Tigers got a run each in the third and sixth innings. The Lady Warriors scored their sixth run in the fifth frame.
Shelby Brown, Jaki Bender and Haley Sainato supplied two hits each for Mohawk. Lea Brown drove in three runs for the winners and Hannah Morrow chipped in with a pair.
Bender (2-0) earned the complete-game win. She gave up four hits and two unearned runs with three walks and seven strikeouts.
“We’re adjusting well and we’ll have to keep working on things,” Mohawk coach Pam Beatty said. “We have an experienced group, which is nice.”
