High School Wrestling: Laurel valiant in loss to Freedom

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel High wrestling team went into Freedom with aspirations of victory.

The Spartans left with something else — respect.

More specifically, respect from coach Kevin Carmichael who, despite his team’s 36-33 defeat, couldn’t be prouder of the way his team performed in a tough Class AA, Section 1-B bout.

“It was a great match to watch. It was back-and-forth the entire time with the lead,” he said. “I have absolutely nothing bad to say about our boys. Freedom always puts out a tough squad and we fought them. They wanted to win, they just didn’t get to.”

Laurel (1-3 section, 1-3 overall) got strong performances from its seniors, Ryan Soom, Harley Peterson, Jacob Breitenstein and Shane King.

Soom pinned Levi Bonzo after 1:33 in the 132-pound weight class. Peterson won a decision over Lane Ward, 14-7, at 145 pounds.

“Harley is wrestling this year better than I’ve ever seen him wrestle,” Carmichael said. “He went out and wrestled a great match.”

Shane King’s match followed in the 152-pound weight class, falling to state qualifier Bo Bonzo in 1:40.

“Shane has that attitude where he’ll wrestle anybody.” Carmichael said. “He went at him and almost took him down in the first period. It’s nice to have kids like him on the team. He’s going to go deep in individual tournaments this year. His heart shows on the mat.”

Breitenstein quickly finished his match in the 160-pound weight class, earning a pin of Justin Smart in 47 seconds.

“He’s wrestling very well right now,” Carmichael said. “He’s not even at 100 recent. He’s wrestling really well anyway.”

Other winners for the Spartans include Justin Mayberry, Ryan Glasser, Dalton Rosta and Jason Powell. Mayberry won via a pin of Matt Pavlick in 1:58 in the 120-pound weight class, while the other three won by forfeit.

Laurel’s Rick Nail lost a tough battle to Tyler Cuzins in 4:21 in the 285-pound weight class.

“Amazing thing about it is, he just got physically cleared Tuesday,” Carmichael said. “He impressed me with ability to go out in the third period and almost beat this kid. It was 3-1 in the third period. It might have been the best I’ve seen him wrestle. He had the will to win. He lasted into the third period with one day of practice.”

With the loss, the Spartans will not reach their team goal of finishing the month of January undefeated, but the team’s desire to finish above .500 hasn’t wavered.

“We want to finish the season in the section at 5-3,” Carmichael said. “We have a handful of wrestlers who just fight. I think that’s the attitude of the school, too. The kids are not afraid to work.”

Following are the results:

106 — Double forfeit.
