Fall Sports: A roundup of action from Aug. 19

NEW CASTLE — The Wilmington High girls tennis team started the season off strong yesterday.

The Lady Greyhounds rolled to a 4-1 District 10, Region 1-AA win over Kennedy Catholic at Westminster College.

Alanna Elliott (No. 1), Alexis Donati (No. 2) and Nikki McCown (No. 3) all captured singles wins for Wilmington.

The doubles tandem of Taylor Cox/Allyson Krupa (No. 2) also notched a win for the Lady Greyhounds.

Following are the results:

Wilmington 4, Kennedy Catholic 1

SINGLES

1. Alanna Elliott (W) def. Jensen Kirila 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

2. Alexis Donati (W) def. Becca Kish 6-3, 6-3.

3. Nikki McCown (W) Abby Lenhart 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

DOUBLES

1. Avi Danta/Jillian Dunn (KC) def. Lydea Kraynak/Holly Vernon def. 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

2. Taylor Cox/Allyson Krupa (W) def. Katie Summers/Jessie Micco 6-1, 6-0.

EXHIBITIONS

1. Lydea Zoeller/Kaitlyn Meyer (W) won 6-0.

2. Emily Mayes (W) won 6-3.



Boys golf

’Hounds finish fifth


Nate Anthony paced Wilmington with an 80 in a District 10, Region 2-AA mega match at Tam O’Shanter.

The Greyhounds notched a 391 to finish in fifth place out of five schools. Hickory won the event with a 327 and Sharon was next with a 360.

Matt Zimmer followed Anthony’s effort with a 95 for Wilmington and Josh Bonnici carded a 105. Zeb Horchler had a 111.



Laurel rolls to win

Nick Peluso and Evan Long each shot a 36 to lead the Spartans to a 190-236 WPIAL Section 5, Division 2 victory over Union at Green Meadows.

Tucker Skerbetz and Brady Crawford both fired a 38 for Laurel (1-0) and Colton Brown was next with a 42.

Austin Burk led the Scotties with a 41 and Cole Gorgacz was next with a 46. Jacob Jendrysik and Michael Galmarini both shot a 47. Jeff Schindel added a 55.
