Galbreath retires as Geneva women’s coach

Ron Galbreath announced his retirement Tuesday as women’s basketball coach at Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

Galbreath, a Wampum native who went on to star at Westminster College, coached the Titans’ men’s team for 25 years. He became Geneva women’s coach prior to the 2002 season.

While recovering from a stroke in the spring of 2008, Galbreath decided to take a leave of absence for the entire 2008-09 season, with the intention of returning this season. In his first six seasons with the Lady Golden Tornadoes, he recorded a 111-48 overall record and took Geneva to its only NAIA national tournament appearance in school history.

Sports writer Ron Poniewasz Jr. spoke with Galbreath last night and will provide details in Wednesday’s edition.
