The Laurel High girls volleyball team opened with a key WPIAL Section 3-A victory last night.
Kasie Brown had 11 digs, 16 passes, 11 kills, two aces and 13 points as the defending section champion Lady Spartans held off Union, 25-15, 10-25, 26-28, 25-16, 15-10.
Laurel is coached by Nicole Downing, a former Laurel star who served as coach at Union last season.
Miranda Mraz added 23 digs, 57 passes, two kills and five points for the winners.
Keri Lawrence had two digs, 16 passes and 10 points while Kaitlyn Anderson had five points and six passes. Jackie Schlemmer posted five digs, four kills, five passes and 13 points, and Rebecca Kerr added seven digs, 24 assists, five kills, two passes and six points.
Stephanie Fullwood contributed seven kills and two blocks, while Abbie Poulos chipped in with seven digs, six kills, 12 passes, three aces and eight points.
Cameron Lewis paced the Lady Scots (0-1, 0-1) with nine kills and four blocks. Caitlyn Neely followed with five kills and three blocks while Racquel Wright supplied 21 digs.
Union won the JV matchup, 25-15, 16-25, 15-9.
Dalainey Meals paced Laurel with 10 points, while Stephanie Gibson had four kills and Alexis Haney added 11 assists.
Lady ’Hounds triumph
Wilmington defeated Oil City in a District 10 nonregion match, 25-3, 24-4, 27-7.
Allie Cioffi paced Wilmington (1-1) with 28 points and Susan Miller supplied nine kills and seven points. Leah Day chipped in with five kills and three blocks. Haley Marett posted eight assists and nine points. Chalyn Kaufman added nine points and Emily Romeo had eight points.
The Lady ’Hounds won the JV contest, 25-6 and 26-5.
Parris Sallman led Wilmington with 14 points and Emily Yohman delivered 11 points. Alaura Hanssen chipped in with eight points.
